Pioneer Radio Screen Goes Black
Confirmed Issue:
The head unit/radio screen goes black and shuts off randomly.
Affected Units:
Any Vandoit LIV or DO built on a 2016-2019 Ford Chassis
Issue Explanation:
As the head unit is being used, it will randomly turn off and go black. Sometimes this turns off audio, and sometimes the audio may still work. Touching the buttons does not wake up the screen.
Resolution:
1. Hit the rocker switches once to confirm the DC Electric rocker switch is turned on and dark blue to ensure that the DC Electric rocker switch is operational.
Note: The rocker switches are on a timer, so it may be the 8 hour timer was reached and shut off the head unit.
2. If the DC Electric rocker switch is operational but the head unit screen is black, turn the DC Electric rocker switch off for a few seconds and turn back on.
3. Is the head unit warm or hot to the touch? Is the head unit exposed to intense sunlight? If so, try to shade it and keep it as cool as possible; for example, park the van out of direct sunlight. Like a computer, the head unit can heat up as you use it and will shut off due to overheating.
4. Confirm the firmware is up to date for your radio/head unit. Up-to-date firmware can be downloaded directly from Pioneer's website and transferred to the head unit via a USB drive. There are also plenty of Youtube videos and online articles available on this topic.
5. The next step will be to check electrical connections. Reach out to Vandoit Customer support for instructions on how to remove the head unit cover before proceeding to the next steps.
6. Visually inspect any wiring connections to make sure everything looks securely connected by removing the top cover above the head unit. Check the connection on the rocker switch resistor to be sure it is tightly wound and secure. View this video for how to check the resistor connection.
