Maintaining the Solar System

Maintaining the Solar System

Article Objective:

In this article, you will learn how to maintain the Vandoit rooftop solar system. The solar system requires periodic upkeep in order to receive incoming solar energy at maximum efficiency. If panels become covered by dirt, snow, or debris, they will not receive as much incoming solar power as clean panels do.  The GoPower solar controller may display lower than usual incoming amperage, and/or the controller may display a moon icon if the panels are completely covered.  The GoPower solar controller is rated for a 30amp continuous charge and up to 600 watts of solar.

Affected Units:

Any Vandoit van with solar panels

Items Needed:
1. Broom or Hose
2. Window Cleaner
3. Wash cloth (or paper towel)

Steps to maintaining your solar system:

1.  Keep the solar panels clear of dirt, snow, or debris by periodically using a safe ladder to inspect the solar panels on the roof of the van.  Use a broom or hose to remove larger loose debris, then use automotive grade window cleaner and paper towels or a wash cloth to clean the panels' surface.

2.  While cleaning the solar panels, do not put any weight on the Ford Transit roof or on the solar panels themselves.  The Ford Transit roof is not weight-bearing and may bend or warp under pressure.  The solar panels are made of glass and may crack or break if weight is put on them.

3.  If the glass on the solar panels cracks or breaks, the solar panels may still be usable.  However, the broken glass on the panel will likely become problematic, as the solar cells are no longer protected from moisture. This will shorten the life of the panel and probably decrease its energy output.  We recommend replacing solar panels if they crack or break.
