Confirmed Issue:
The GoPower IC2000 Inverter Monitor displays an "OTP Shutdown" error message.
Affected Units:
Any Vandoit van with an AGM battery system
Issue Explanation:
OTP stands for "over temperature protection." This indicates that either the batteries or the inverter are getting too hot.
Resolution:
1. If the Dometic air conditioner is running, turn it off, unplug shore power, and turn off the inverter. Once everything is off, turn the inverter back on and plug into shore power. Your inverter screen should read "bulk charging."
2. Remove the covers surrounding the inverter on the electrical box. If you have a portable fan, have that blow over the inverter. This is not to cool the inverter off so much as it is to blow hot air away from surrounding the inverter. (More than likely, it is the inverter that is overheating, as it is converting DC to AC for the air conditioner to run. The inverter, much like a computer or phone, needs to be kept below a certain temperature. The fan inside probably cannot do enough to keep it cool, as the inverter is inside a hot box.)
3. Before resuming use of the air conditioner and/or other high-power-drawing devices, please read these important considerations:
1) When you resume using the air conditioner, use the low fan speed only and keep the temperature set to no lower than the mid-70s. Generally speaking, your air conditioner is not meant to create an igloo inside the van; it is meant to take the edge off of the heat. Demanding much more than this temperature setting from the air conditioner, especially during hot weather, will cause components to overheat.
2) When possible, park the van in the shade and on dirt or gravel as opposed to pavement. Turn the vehicle on and use the van air conditioning to lower the internal temperature initially. Requiring the van air conditioner to do this "heavy lifting" instead of the roof air conditioner can help alleviate stress on the entire battery/electrical system.
3) If the air conditioner is not kicking on and off, but is running non-stop without taking a break, this probably indicates that you are asking too much of the air conditioner and battery/electrical system. Sometimes on especially hot days (i.e. temperatures in the 100s), there is not much one can do aside from setting the air conditioner in the high 70s on the low fan speed.
4) Keep in mind that the water heater is a high-power-drawing device. Many van owners forget that this device is turned on and that it demands a lot of power from the battery/electrical system. Turning off the water heater when it is not in use will reduce the demand on your van's battery/electrical system.
