Espar Is Making a Loud Ticking Noise

Espar Is Making a Loud Ticking Noise

Confirmed Issue:

When operating the Espar furnace, it starts making a loud ticking or thumping sound. The Espar is still heating and otherwise operating properly.

Affected Units:

Any Vandoit van with an Espar system

Issue Explanation:

The Espar is operating properly. A loud ticking or thumping noise during operation is normal; it is the sound of the Espar dosing fuel pump cycling and the frequency of the sound increases as the fuel pump cycles faster.  The sound tends to be most noticeable during the first five minutes of operation.  Vans with the B4 model tend to be somewhat louder than those with the B4L model.

Resolution:

It is likely no resolution is needed, but you may want to inspect the fuel pump mount to ensure the rubber isolator is tight and the pump is not touching any of the van's framing.

Idea
This video provides a helpful guide to performing a visual inspection of your Espar heater.  (Please note that the video shows a different Espar model than the one you have in your van, but the information still applies.)
