Charging the Van from a 30 Amp Plug

Charging the Van from a 30 Amp Plug

Confirmed Issue:
A van owner/user would like to charge the van by plugging the shore power cord into a 30 amp plug.

Affected Units:
Any Vandoit van

Issue Explanation:
Some van owners would like to charge their vans from a 30 amp plug, which is commonly used for RV hookups.  This can be accomplished by using a 30 amp male to 15 amp female adapter with the shore power cord.  Vandoit factory settings allow for 15 incoming amps so that if the van is plugged into a circuit that is powering other devices, the van is less likely to overload and trip the circuit.

Troubleshooting:
If your van does not appear to be charging when plugged into shore power and the reducer/adapter, please check the following:

1.  Plug shore power into a non-GFCI outlet whenever possible, as GFCI outlets tend to trip the circuit breaker easily.  See this article about shore power flipping a house breaker for more information.

2.  Check the reducer/adapter using a multimeter.  If the reducer/adapter does not show any voltage, it may be faulty.  Test it using a different 30 amp plug, extension cord, and 15 amp device.

3.  Check all connections from the van to the shore power cord to the adapter to the wall outlet to be sure they are all fully seated.

If you have additional questions on this topic, submit a ticket through the Customer Support portal or email support@vandoit.com.

While the AGM system can theoretically be raised to receive up to 30 amps of incoming charge, it should not be set higher than 13 incoming amps because the shore power cable and wiring of the van is limited to 15 amps. The Mastervolt system is limited to 13 incoming amps per programing.

It is always better to use the shore power cord provided by Vandoit. If you have lost or broken yours, please submit a ticket through the Customer Support portal or email support@vandoit.com for a replacement.
